ABOUT LAUREN K.P. LAW

I am a biologist with broad interests in coastal ecology, environmental conservation, and public health. With over five years of scientific research experience, some of my fieldwork has taken me to remote fly-in locations in Alberta's boreal forest to the deep-sea of the Pacific Ocean.

For my M.Sc. research, I studied the ecology of deep-sea glass sponge reefs in the Hecate Strait, BC. I mapped the distribution of live and dead sponges in the reefs to determine community structure of commercially important species such as rockfish, halibut, and prawns. I also used taxonomic classification to describe a new sponge species in the reefs in the genus Desmacella. My findings informed policy-makers from Fisheries and Oceans Canada about the health and status of the reefs to help them design a long-term monitoring program.

Beyond my love for the outdoors, I have an equal love for humanitarian work. Having grown up in the inner city of East Vancouver, I am passionate about working with at-risk children and youth, the homeless, and those affected by drug-addiction. I spend my time outside of academia watercolour painting, volunteering in resource centres, and spending as much time adventuring in nature.

In November 2019, I began working as a biologist in the Salmon Enhancement Program at Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Stay tuned for updates on my work!
